| Here is the 2009 race map of the southern route which is run during odd years. The northern route is run during even years. Race veterans say the southern is the more difficult of the two.

| Shadow feels that after a bit over 1100 miles it is better ro ride in the sled rather than walk. As a result he was flown the last twenty five miles to Nome.

| During the last half of the race, if a dog is dropped for medical reasons, they are flow to Nome and taken here to the dog yard. Also, as teams finish the race their dogs are also brought here to wait for their trip back home. You can see the dogs receive a bed of straw and a nice hot meal!
